Dr. Laura Copaken speaks to the Maryland Association of Orthopaedic Technologists (MAOT) at their Spring, 2007 Educational Conference; “It’s All About the Kidz, A Pediatric Orthopaedic Conference"

Dr. Laura Copaken, Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon with Mid-Maryland Musculoskeletal Institute, was invited to speak to the semi-annual conference of the Maryland Association of Orthopaedic Technologists (MAOT) at their Spring, 2007 Educational Conference; “It’s All About the Kidz, A Pediatric Orthopaedic Conference.”
Established in 1998, and based in Reisterstown, MAOT was formed to provide members opportunities for continuing education and maintaining standards for quality care. The invitation to speak was extended by Pett Allen, Jr. OTC, a Board Certified Orthopaedic Technologist and President of MAOT.
The day-long event, attended by over 50 medical professionals, was held at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. Attendees included orthopaedic technologists, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, orthopaedists and orthopaedic residents. Orthopaedic technologists are medical professionals that use bracing and casting techniques to treat conditions such as clubfoot, leg and hip abnormalities to restore maximum function to patients.
Dr. Copaken’s presentation, “Pediatric Hip Disorders,” dealt with several common pediatric hip problems, including dysplasia and Perthes-Calve’ Disease. Other well-known speakers included; John Herzenberg, M.D. of the Rubin Institute who spoke about, “The Ponseti Technique for Clubfoot Deformities” and Laura Toci, M.D., of the Children’s Hospital of Washington, D.C., who’s topic was, “Bone Health” for children.
Dr. Laura Copaken is a graduate of the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine and is board eligible in Orthopaedic Surgery. She completed a fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedic surgery at Washington University School of Medicine where she practiced at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital and the St. Louis Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
Dr. Copaken is a native Marylander. She has special training and expertise in treating adolescent and pediatric fractures and sports injuries as well as congenital disorders. A member of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, she is licensed to practice in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Missouri. While Dr. Copaken treats orthopaedic problems in patients of all ages, she is particularly interested in treating children.
Dr. Copaken regularly speaks to both professional and lay groups on a variety of topics from congenital bone disorders to orthopaedic injuries. Her depth of medical knowledge and experience, coupled with a playful, engaging and energetic style has endeared her to both her patients and their families.
